From going from constructing my college magazine to constructing my final product was a dramatic change. The whole concept of the college magazine was so basic and un-professional and had no body or interest about it and had no work to it in terms of research and planning. Where my Final product had all of this and more.
Research:
During the making of my college magazine there was no research behind it which relflected clearly on the end product. On the other hand my music magazine was completely different. I had to research audiences and their prefrences in terms of popularity of genre and the type of thing they expect to be in a magazine. I researched this by producing a questionnaire which i made on Survey Monkey ( http://www.surveymonkey.com/?cmpid=eng:gb:ps:google&gclid=CK-j2oSIvKcCFQRP4Qodux29AATheresults ) The results I gathered defantly guided me through the best way to produce my magazine to a good standard and a standard that would work for the target audience.
I also took alook at exsisting products where as once again I didn't attempt to do before making my college magazine. Researching exsisting products defantly made me look deeper into the magazine in terms of content and what was expected of a magazine in contrast with the survey I took.
From the research process I gained the skills of textural analysis and learnt how to look deeply into the visual and technical aspects of other exsisting magazines and using this as inspiration and applying this to my own magazine.
Planning:
Making my college magazine required no thought of planning what so ever. Where as my music magazine required alot. Firstly I had to produce a Pitch which required me to state what I was going to do and also required me to name my magazine which is where I came up with RockSound.I also chose my colour theme and the type of images I was hopeing to use within my magazine. I gave examples also of possible fonts and texts I could use within my magazine. Where as on my college magazine I did none of this I simply picked matching colours a simple layout with one single medium close up shot.
Secondly I came up with some flat plans which structured my lay out of my music magazine and guided me to how I wanted my magazine to look. To produce my Pitch I used powerpoint and to produce my flat plans using publisher, already showing a whole lot more work and thought going into my magazine than I did previously did with my college magazine.
In order to get the right look about my magazine I had to think about how I wanted my magazine to look like over all and also what I wanted to show by using my images to extract the meaning. As I mentioned before my college magazine only consisted of one main medium close up image of Emily standing against the christmas tree. I decided to use a variety of styles of images within my music magazine. I knew by using a mixture of live images and posed ones I could construct various feelings and emotions. I thought the live images would show a high stamina audience and would create a fun high energy atmosphere about the magazine. By using posed images I intended to do the opposite by createing a sense of drama and seriousness showing both angles of emotion.
In relation to my photographs I had to make sure my article and images matched up right. By this I mean I decided to base my article on a previous gig I attended. Therefore it made sense for me to shoot images which were from the gig it'self which would really highlight the gig and show those who didn't attend the intensity of it. I also had to think about the type of vocabulary I would be using which would relate to the target audience. Lastly I also had to think about the length of the article as my target audience was quite young and stereotypically not fans of reading therefore I had to make the article engaging and short but snappy.
I gained alot of skills whilst planning, the skills I gained were communication skills, I also learnt how to present my idea's effectively and clearly to a understanding point and to which was relavant.
Production:
In terms of image manipulation on my college magazine I used once centered medium close up as my main and only image. In comparison to this in my music magazine I used many posed and live images which were all much more thought about and taken more proffesionally. I also used many editing techniques for example free transforming, croping, adding drop shadows, enhancing colour ect. By doing this I learnt how to use photoshop to a higher standard to the point where I could produce good quality images and a even better magazine.
Text manipulation on my college magazine I used simple writing followed by a simple readable font. I developed this for my music magazine by using fonts I had downloaded from Dafont (http://www.dafont.com/) which related to the theme of rock. I also added drop shadows changed the colours, placed coloured blocks behind the text to enhance the text visually. I lastly increasingly wrote alot more short but imformative text blocks to inform the reader of the contents and latest news about the audiences favourite bands. From this I learnt how to make simple writing look visually attractive and eye catching to the audience to draw them in.
From the Layout design and manipulation I especially leant alot from going from a pretty square basic layout to a layout which envolves a build of layers and overlapping which gives the magazine more structure. I originally created my college magazine on publisher, I then went further with my music magazine and used photoshop which increases the quality of the magazine on a whole and gave me more option to how I wanted the magazine to look.
