Evaluation: What institution might distribute your magazine?

Media institutions are  organisations responsible for the production marketing, distributing or regulation of media text, for example magazines, TV programs. Institutions simply are business structures that produce media texts. Well-known UK based company’s such as ITN, BSkyB, ITV, and BBC in particular are responsible for production and marketing their own products. 

Through the duration of the 13 weeks of producing my music magazine and researching I have looked a range of UK magazine publishing institution, for example Bauer. Bauer Media Group was founded in 1875 and is one of the largest magazine publishing houses in Europe responsible for the production of music magazines like Kerrang.

In the publishing process my magazine I wanted an institution that all had all the advantages of a big company like Bauer. I would prefer this because I believe it would push my magazine in the right direction in terms of gaining a audience. A company which already was involved with publishing magazines would be better as this would mean that the company had experience and knowledge into what  makes a magazine successful  and how to go about getting the right exposure for my magazine.

·      Being involved with other magazine,  a bigger institution would have more opportunities for advertisement , more advertisement  in different social groups would create a possible varied  audience. Also A well known publisher would bring in the audience as they no they are going to get a good quality magazine. Also a bigger name will mean more money and a chance to incorporate bigger bands and increase the advertisement side.

B  But of course with a company as big as Bauer there are some disadvantages in which being:

• My magazine will be competing will other magazines of the same genre. This meaning my magazine would have to have come up with something striking and unique to compete with the standards of other magazines produced by Bauer. This possibly meaning going about advertising different and even pushing the boat out in terms of the content and featured bands. All of this of course costs money, but there is the problem of would my magazine be worth spending money on? or is there other magazines which are already at a higher standard and quality

In conclusion I personally think a company like Bauer would be the best publishers for my magazine especially because of the history behind the company and their success.
