Evaluation: Representations in your work

How does your media product represnt a particular social group

I used and featured a female band to represent the average target audience of the female population. I found that surprisingly females are more likely to read a magazine of the genre I'm trying to present. The strong attitude and determination shown by GLAMOURRR'S lead singer Demi will encourage representation of women's rights within the music industry and prove you don't have to be male to be a apart of a successful rock band.

The strong un-fased attitued will represent the girls who read the magazine and encourage them to believe they can do anything they wanna do regardless the stereotypicall following.

The colour scheme used was done percifcally to relate to the audience by the colour connotaions in order to evoke emotions . The colours simply standing for high energy, passion and courage which ironically relates to the female population and the re-enforcement of womens rights.

Evaluation: Who would be the audience for your product?

After gathering my results from my survey it has come to clear that the audience most likely to read my magazine or magazines of similar genre would be 14-16 year old girls. Also girls who are also very much into the rock/alternate genre of music. I would stereotypically presume the girls who follow this sort of music would be fairly rebellious and highly filled with energy and adrenaline.

Evaluation: Progression from college magazine to final product

From going from constructing my college magazine to constructing my final product was a dramatic change. The whole concept of the college magazine was so basic and un-professional and had no body or interest about it and had no work to it in terms of research and planning.  Where my Final product had all of this and more.

Research:

During the making of my college magazine there was no research behind it which relflected clearly on the end product. On the other hand my music magazine was completely different. I had to research audiences and their prefrences in terms of popularity of genre and the type of thing they expect to be in a magazine. I researched this by producing a questionnaire which i made on Survey Monkey ( http://www.surveymonkey.com/?cmpid=eng:gb:ps:google&gclid=CK-j2oSIvKcCFQRP4Qodux29AATheresults ) The results I gathered defantly guided me through the best way to produce my magazine to a good standard and a standard that would work for the target audience.

I also took alook at exsisting products where as once again I didn't attempt to do before making my college magazine. Researching exsisting products defantly made me look deeper into the magazine in terms of content and what was expected of a magazine in contrast with the survey I took.

From the research process I gained the skills of textural analysis and learnt how to look deeply into the visual and technical aspects of other exsisting magazines and using this as inspiration and applying this to my own magazine.

Planning:

Making my college magazine required no thought of planning what so ever. Where as my music magazine required alot. Firstly I had to produce a Pitch which required me to state what I was going to do and also required me to name my magazine which is where I came up with RockSound.I also chose my colour theme and the type of images I was hopeing to use within my magazine. I gave examples also of possible fonts and texts I could use within my magazine. Where as on my college magazine I did none of this I simply picked matching colours a simple layout with one single medium close up shot.

Secondly I came up with some flat plans which structured my lay out of my music magazine and guided me to how I wanted my magazine to look. To produce my Pitch I used powerpoint and to produce my flat plans using publisher, already showing a whole lot more work and thought going into my magazine than I did previously did with my college magazine.

In order to get the right look about my magazine I had to think about how I wanted my magazine to look like over all and also what I wanted to show by using my images to extract the meaning. As I mentioned before my college magazine only consisted of one main medium close up image of Emily standing against the christmas tree. I decided to use a variety of styles of images within my music magazine. I knew by using a mixture of live images and posed ones I could construct various feelings and emotions. I thought the live images would show a high stamina audience and would create a fun high energy atmosphere about the magazine. By using posed images I intended to do the opposite by createing a sense of drama and seriousness showing both angles of emotion.

In relation to my photographs I had to make sure my article and images matched up right. By this I mean I decided to base my article on a previous gig I attended. Therefore it made sense for me to shoot images which were from the gig it'self which would really highlight the gig and show those who didn't attend the intensity of it. I also had to think about the type of vocabulary I would be using which would relate to the target audience. Lastly I also had to think about the length of the article as my target audience was quite young and stereotypically not fans of reading therefore I had to make the article engaging and short  but snappy.

I gained alot of skills whilst planning, the skills I gained were communication skills, I also learnt how to present my idea's effectively  and clearly to a understanding point and to which was relavant.

Production:

In terms of image manipulation on my college magazine I used once centered medium close up as my main and only image. In comparison to this in my music magazine I used many posed and live images which were all much more thought about and taken more proffesionally. I also used many editing techniques for example free transforming, croping, adding drop shadows, enhancing colour ect. By doing this I learnt how to use photoshop to a higher standard to the point where I could produce good quality images and a even better magazine.

Text manipulation on my college magazine I used simple writing followed by a simple readable font. I developed this for my music magazine by using fonts I had downloaded from Dafont (http://www.dafont.com/) which related to the theme of rock. I also added drop shadows changed the colours, placed coloured blocks behind the text to enhance the text visually. I lastly  increasingly wrote alot more short but imformative text blocks to inform the reader of the contents and latest news about the audiences favourite bands. From this I learnt how to make simple writing look visually attractive and eye catching to the audience to draw them in.

From the Layout design and manipulation I especially leant alot from going from a pretty square basic layout to a layout which envolves a build of layers and overlapping which gives the magazine more structure. I originally created my college magazine on publisher, I then went further with my music magazine and used photoshop which increases the quality of the magazine on a whole and gave me more option to how I wanted the magazine to look.

Evaluation: What institution might distribute your magazine?

Media institutions are  organisations responsible for the production marketing, distributing or regulation of media text, for example magazines, TV programs. Institutions simply are business structures that produce media texts. Well-known UK based company’s such as ITN, BSkyB, ITV, and BBC in particular are responsible for production and marketing their own products.
Through the duration of the 13 weeks of producing my music magazine and researching I have looked a range of UK magazine publishing institution, for example Bauer. Bauer Media Group was founded in 1875 and is one of the largest magazine publishing houses in Europe responsible for the production of music magazines like Kerrang.

In the publishing process my magazine I wanted an institution that all had all the advantages of a big company like Bauer. I would prefer this because I believe it would push my magazine in the right direction in terms of gaining a audience. A company which already was involved with publishing magazines would be better as this would mean that the company had experience and knowledge into what  makes a magazine successful  and how to go about getting the right exposure for my magazine.
·      Being involved with other magazine,  a bigger institution would have more opportunities for advertisement , more advertisement  in different social groups would create a possible varied  audience. Also A well known publisher would bring in the audience as they no they are going to get a good quality magazine. Also a bigger name will mean more money and a chance to incorporate bigger bands and increase the advertisement side.
sd
B  But of course with a company as big as Bauer there are some disadvantages in which being:
  • My magazine will be competing will other magazines of the same genre. This meaning my magazine would have to have come up with something striking and unique to compete with the standards of other magazines produced by Bauer. This possibly meaning going about advertising different and even pushing the boat out in terms of the content and featured bands. All of this of course costs money, but there is the problem of would my magazine be worth spending money on? or is there other magazines which are already at a higher standard and quality

In conclusion I personally think a company like Bauer would be the best publishers for my magazine especially because of the history behind the company and their success.

Final Front cover

Photographs to be used within my Magazine

The images below are a selection of the ones I have decided to use within my magazine. I have chose these images to appear in my magazine because I believe these are the ones most relevant to my chosen genre and ones in which fit best to my plans as seen on the post previoussly. They will also be used to engage the audience and capture their interest.

Front cover

I have chosen this image as my main image on my front cover because I think it has that sense of edginess and depth about it which I was looking for. I have scene throughout my research process on rock magazines this type of image is common to to use on front covers. Although the image itself admitably isn't of such a high standard in terms of quality, but I think the image could really work once slight editing has taken place been and the image fitting into my format and [plans.

DPS

I have chosen to feature this image on my DPS because it indicates the stereotypical audience in which reads this particular type of genre of magazine. I also believe it will connect to the audience more or increase attention if fans and readers where featured within the magazine itself putting their own stamp and comments on gigs and reviews of topics.

One of Free giant live posters

I decided to use this image of Sean Smith as a poster basically because it's quite a up close and personal image I successfully took and I think it would be a huge selling point for my magazine to incorporate within.

Once again I decided to use this image as a audience selling point of a poster because it's another realistic image of a live shot which i took. I think due to the images I have decided to use as posters being live images will increase hopefully the selling point of my magazine because the audience will feel more connected especially if they attended.
DPS
I decided to use live images within my DPS simply because i have written a gig review so it just seemed convenient to do so. I think by using live images will engage the audience more and draw their attention. Also the colours of the images due to the lights and cameras within the academy deliver a emotion of the energy adrenaline and happiness within the room which will reflect onto the DPS.

I like the way this image is of a wider shot which ables us as the audience to capture the atmosphere of the whole stage with a clear view of the band on stage.

Once again as the image of Sean Smith showed a close up this image does to. I like the medium close up shots as they enhance personality.

Photography planning

In order to make my magazine look like the stereotypical Rock magazine I will attempt to use a mixture of live images and posed images. The live images with ironically link to the target audience of the magazine to whom we see to be energectic and outgoing. The use of Posed images will add a sense of depth and edgyness to the magazine which could also be linked in relation to the target audience.

The city of Manchester was about to whitness You Me At Six's best performance yet. Things may be cold for those fans awaiting to get it but things were more than defantly were about to  heat up in the Apollo. The Apollo was filled with a young and energetic vibe which swept back stage to the bands awaiting there moment. Audience Research

Questionaire:
a href="http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/3J39Y8N">Click here to take survey</a>

Results of the questionnaire:

Survey Evaluation:

From the results i gathered from the survey i posted out i found the age group in which had more of a interest in music magazines was 14-16 year old girls. This wasn't a huge surprise as i always would determin girls were more than likely to read music magazines in comparison to boys statstically.

Also from my results i found music magazines in general aren't bought by the audience very often as the results show the audience only buy a music magazine once a month or 'other' which indicates music magazine's aren't really as popular as personally thought?. This makes me question the reasons behind this, and how i can make my magazine more appealing to my target audience.

The results of the next question indicated that NME was the most popular music magazine bought by the audience closely followed by Kerrang. Iv determind this may be due to the fact NME relates to the music within the charts and music more likey to be heard on the radio. It also came to my attention the audience are willing to pay up to £3-£4 for a magazine which indicates the other end of the scale to the results of question 3. By this i mean as i mentioned before the audience don't very often buy the magazines but from the results from question 5 it seems the audience would be willing to pay if the quality of the magazine was good.

In comparison to the type of magazine the audience would buy the most common genre of music voted by the people who took part in the survey partailly realted to the result of this which was to be expected. But as before the genre in which relates to Kerrang e.g Rock came very closely behind.

The reason behind why the audience would buy a music magazine was due to which bands where featuring in the pacific issue. I can personally relate to the audience as i would only buy the magazine if the bands in it where the ones i particualry liked.

As expected from the audience who took part in the questionnaire the main source in terms of media where they get their information from would be from the internet or the t.v. This could indicate why the sale of magazines isn't that high and the audience don't buy magzines as often.

In conclusion i have decided to produce a rock music magazine. I have decided to do this as from the survey i have noticed rock magazines are almsot as equally popular as the NME magazines, and maybe if i followed my results of what is right for the audience i could increase the popluarity of the rock music magazine. I also am i fan of rock music and as a reader of magazines like for example Kerrang or Rocksound i know what i look for as a reader personally.

Research of Exisiting Products (Rocksound issue134) Double Page Spread

Colour scheme: In terms of the colour scheme the editor of Rocksound has once again chosen darker colours as seen before on the front cover. In comparison to the Kerrang magazine this is different and presents a sense of seroiuness or a heavier genre of music were as Kerrang used its colour scheme to highlight and foreground the high energy outgoing atmosphere in reflection to its readers.

Photography:   The photography on the DPS is alot different to the photography used wihin the Kerrang magazines DPS. The DPS in Rocksound only displays one main image which sets in the whole page. Around the image there is a mist of red which could possible indicate danger which adds to the effect of the image. There are no other images in relation to the single live image which we are shown. This is dramatically different to the Kerrang magazine because as you have seen there is more than one image on the DPS which relates to the article. Showing more images engages more to the audience and makes them more interested in the magazine in personal opinion.

Fonts:  The font style on the DPS is the same as seen throughout most of the magazines i have annalysed previously in terms of the use of capital letters to indicate to the audience as key information. The article itself is written as normal with a spooky kibnd of edgy readable font to highlight the intensity of the gig and to hightlight the fact it is a rock magazine.

Writing Style:  The writting style on DPS is very basic and light worded, there isn't alot of writing on the two pages and the article only highlights the key events of the gig which on one hand is crucial. The article fits around the image  which could be interpreted as tryng to fill up space as there isn't alot to say about the gig it'self.

Layout: The way in which the DPS is presented is intresting as it doesn't have alot to the page, there is a simple image of the guitarist surrounded by the article. Personally for me this DPS isn't very eye catching and probably a page i would skip through and not even bother reading. I think the layout of the page also doesn't help as it is very bland with not very much going on and it really doesn't speak out to the audience

Text/picture ratio:  The DPS contains more writing than it does images, this is due to the DPS only having one main image to set the whole page rather than having lots of little snipits of the gig surrounding the article itself  as we have seen in the Kerrang. I think personally this shows a older target audience to the one i'm probably going to aim mine at.

Publisher: Sonic Media are responsible for publishing Rocksound as equally responsible for publishing Mojo,Empire and Q along many other magazine's in various media categorys. There strategy is to connect with audiences with excellent content through their broad multi-touch point brand platforms, wherever and whenever and however thay want. They have a huge advantage over pure play magazine or radio competitors due to the wide portfolio or influential brands. So in terms of a certain target audience, there is none they range in terms of the magazine or radio show they are trying to sell

Research of Exisiting Products (Roscksound issue 134) Contents page

Colour scheme: In terms of the colour scheme the editor of Rocksound has chosen darker colours as seen before on the front cover and once again in comparison to the Kerrang magazine this is different and presents a sense of seroiuness were as Kerrang used its colour scheme to highligh the high energy outgoing atmosphere in reflection to its readers. .

Photography:   The photography on the contents is alot different to the photography used on the Kerrang magazines contents as the contents on Rocksound only displays one main images which sets in the whole contents page. I personally feel this doesnt highlight the content of the magazine leading the target audience maybe a little astray and under mystery to what will appear within the magazine.

Fonts:  The font on the contents repeats from the front cover, by this i mean the use of capitals. The  use of capitals maybe makes up for the lack of photography as this fonts are drawing in the attention of the audience. I also like the way the text almost looks as if it has been handwritten giving the contents a sense personalisasion and depth which connects with the audience.

Writing Style:  The writting on the contents is as expected very blunt and only inicates the basic contents which is to be expected over the next few pages. In reflection to the photography i think due to the lack of both writting and images the contents isn't as welcoming and audience appealing as the Kerrang Magazine, adding a sense of dullness to the magazine.

Overall Look:  The overall look of the contents is once again very simple .The way in which the contents is presented is intresting as it doesn't have much of a interesting and eye catching audience appeal. The layout is very much very full on and square which could add a sense of seriouness to the content of the magazine.

Text/picture ratio:  The contents holds in ratio alot more text which may indicate a older target audience.

Research of Exisiting Products (Rocksound issue134) Front cover

Front Cover

Colour scheme:
In terms of the colour scheme the editor for Rocksound has chosen once again in comparison to the Kerrang magazine basic bold colours in which symbolise mostly positive emotions in which will reflect towards the target audience, attracting them to buying or reading the magazine. The editor has clearly used these percific colours on the front cover to ironically link the target audience to the magazine it's self .

Photography: Their is a milder amount of images on the front compared to the excessive amount of images on the front of Kerrang. The images on Rocksound are of a much smaller ratio and are more compact driving towards a much buiser atmosphere within the magazine it'self. The main image on the magazine of 'The dammed Things' is once again posed which adds a sense of edge and seriousness to the magazine. The images on the bottom right consist of a range of various styles which indicates the magazine is full of not only the more serious articles but articles in which could relate to the target audience. For example the live images ironically again link to the audience and the energy and liveness the target audience are ironically known for. The style of the photographs are in relation to the topic of the articles within the magazine meaning they symbolise the mood or seriousness of what is to be expected within the magazine.

Fonts:  The text on the front of Rocksound is as before like Kerrang in CAPITALS which captures the audience attention and almost indicates the loudness of the magazine due to the volume of the text. As you can see from the image on the top, the magazine name runs behind the image noticeablycreating a sense of loudness and buisness ,most of the writing looks as if it has been printed rather than  hand written like in the Kerrang which shows us as the audience the relaxed atmosphere which is achieved throughout the Kerrang  magazine. Where as the printed writing shows the audience more of a serious side which indicates maybe the content on the magazine.

Writing Style: The writing style on the front cover of Rocksound is very blunt and doesn't encorpret alot of detail, only enough to indicate to the audience what will be featuring in the magazine. The amount of writing in comparison to Kerrang holds more writing, but still text which is ideal for the the target audience.

Overall Look:  The overall look of the magazine is very simple and there isn't  alot  going on visually which indicates the business of the industry and draws the target audience in. The way in which the magazine is presented is intresting as it doesn't have a straight on basic layout. There is alot of over lapping and illustrations increase the visual status of the magazine, increasing the likely hood of selling.

Text/picture ratio: On the front cover alone there is more writing than images. I believe this is because  the front cover being a huge selling point, offers the chance to advertise special offers to persuade the target audience to buy the magazine, they do this by highlighting key features which will be the magazine and use quotes so the audience becomes interested to what there favourite bands have to say,  fans then can relate and become more interested gathering a sense of envolvenment and can relate to the bands.

Research of Exisiting Products (kerrang Issue 1338) Double page spread

Colour Scheme:  The colour scheme of this DPS is fairly light and welcoming just as seen previously on the other kerrang contents I annalysed.  I personally think the colour scheme is very welcoming and conveys a sense of business and a full content within the magazine.

Photography:  I like the way there are images of the pages within the magazine on the contents page, I think this very direct to the audience and indicates to them perfectly what is inside rather them flicking through the magazine. The images on the contents are all of a posed standard which could possible indicate seriouness or the Slash has a smile on his face could defuse us the other way.

Writing Style: In terms of the writing style of the contents page it's once again very basic and informs us as the audience of the crucial information the audience need to know about the content of the whole magazine.

Overall Look:  I really like the overall look of the contents I believe it connects with the audience really well and has due to the images and colour scheme it betrays a welcoming to the audience or the possible readers/buyers.

Text/picture ratio:  Seeing as it is a contents page as expected there is more text in comparison to images.

Publisher: Beaur Music are responsible for publishing Kerrang as equally responsible for publishing Mojo,Empire and Q along many other magazine's in various media categorys.
